Ms. Mary's Monday Review

Carmen Agra Deedy is the author of a number of our books in the Youth Services Department, but she is also a renowned story teller.  She has appeared as a guest repeatedly at the Athens Story Telling Festival (which is every October at the Limestone County Courthouse Square).  Ms. Deedy is an immigrant, so she appreciates the perspective of varied cultures, and 14 Cows for America is a true account of a young man who bridges a cultural gap.  Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah crossed the Atlantic Ocean to study in the United States, and after witnessing September 11, 2001 himself, he shared the horrors of the event with his people on a visit home.  Fourteen cows from his tribe were presented to the American ambassador in a special ceremony, in hopes of healing some of the pain felt after the attack on America.
