Ms. Mary's Monday Review

Carmen Agra Deedy is the author of a number of our books in the Youth Services Department, but she is also a renowned story teller.  She has appeared as a guest repeatedly at the Athens Story Telling Festival (which is every October at the Limestone County Courthouse Square).  Ms. Deedy is an immigrant, so she appreciates the perspective of varied cultures, and 14 Cows for America is a true account of a young man who bridges a cultural gap.  Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah crossed the Atlantic Ocean to study in the United States, and after witnessing September 11, 2001 himself, he shared the horrors of the event with his people on a visit home.  Fourteen cows from his tribe were presented to the American ambassador in a special ceremony, in hopes of healing some of the pain felt after the attack on America.

Ms. Mary's Monday Review

Kathrine Switzer thought women could run.  Even at schools where only men were on the teams, she was allowed to run with the men.  She once ran 31 miles, and she knew she could handle a marathon, like any man, because that course would only be 26.2 miles.  She was one of the early runners who proved that track was a great sport for girls.   Her Fearless Run is written by Kim Chaffee, and it tells about her early life and the day she completed the Boston Marathon!

Ms. Mary's Monday Review

The book Drawn Together by Minh Le is a wonderful way to discuss communicating with those who speak another language, but it also shows the love between grandparents and grandchildren.  This book was recommended by a parent who reads a lot of good children's books.  It was illustrated by Caldecott medalist Dan Santat.  It's easy to read, at A. R. level 2.1, and passing the A. R. test will earn you 0.5 point.
